Maternal Nutrition

During pregnancy all women need more food, a varied diet, and micronutrient supplements. Energy needs increase in the second and particularly the third trimester of pregnancy. Maternal deficiencies of some micronutrients can affect the quality of breast milk. For example, studies have shown that appropriate supplementation improves vitamin A levels in the mother, in her breast milk, and in the infant.
